1. Diet culture and the “beach bod.”
If the idea of dressing for warmer weather causes you distress, you are not alone. Summer body anxiety can impact anyone who struggles with negative body image and can be triggering for those working to maintain their recovery from eating disorders.
Clothes are meant to fit people – not the other way around. Wear what makes you feel comfortable.
2. Disrupted routines.
During the summer months, disrupted routines can mean missed appointments with your therapist, inconsistent mealtimes, increased anxiety, less access to your support network, and less structure in general. In addition to these potential triggers, some may experience the disruption itself as a loss of control and respond in a way that could threaten their recovery.
3. Comparison
“Comparison is the death of joy.”
― Mark Twain
PLEASE stop comparing your body to the filtered and otherwise-manipulated images you see on social media, etc. This is good advice for all of us (all the time, not just summer) but feels especially relevant as our feeds begin to overflow with vaca content.
4. Family.
No matter how close you may be to the people you call ‘family,’ the fact is, spending time with loved ones can stir up many complicated, potential eating disorder triggers.
The best thing you can do to ensure family time does not put your recovery at risk is to communicate clearly about your boundaries and expectations.
No matter how it’s been since leaving treatment, it’s normal to struggle in #EatingDisorderRecovery. If you could use some extra support to regain your balance this summer, follow the link in our bio to learn more about Two-Week Intensives for Relapse Prevention. Our team is here for you!
