#BodyChecking is the habit of seeking information about one’s own body’s weight, shape, size, or appearance using scales, mirrors, or other methods.

Body checking behavior is common among people of all genders; most people are interested in some aspects of their appearance. This behavior, however, exists on a spectrum and can be detrimental to body image and mood when done too often. Strategies for keeping body checking behaviors within a healthy range include:
✴limiting social media exposure
✴avoiding scales
✴limiting the frequency and amount of time spent body checking
✴being aware of these behaviors and noticing how they make you feel

Compulsive body checking is not healthy. It often causes body dissatisfaction and can contribute to the development of EDs. Compulsive body checking can negatively impact one’s ability to function at work, in school, and in relationships.

Excessive body checking is associated with anxiety-related health conditions such as #BodyDysmorphicDisorder (BDD) and #ObsessiveCompulsiveDisorder (OCD).

If body checking behaviors and negative feelings are disrupting your daily life, it may be time to consult a mental health professional. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
