#PSA While EDs thrive in isolation, recovery happens in community. 🌈
FACTS:

⇢ LGB adults are more than twice as likely as heterosexual adults to experience a mental health condition.

⇢ Transgender individuals are nearly four times as likely as cisgender individuals to experience a #mentalhealth condition.

⇢ LGBTQ+ identified people experience unique stressors that may contribute to the development of EDs.

⇢ EDs impact some segments of the #LGBTQ+ community more than others.

⇢ Gay males represent ~5% of the total male population, but among males who have eating disorders, 42% identify as gay. Gay males are also seven times more likely to report binging and 12 times more likely to report purging than heterosexual males.

⇢ Access to gender-affirming care is associated with better mental health outcomes. (IT SAVES LIVES)

⇢In addition to being at-risk for many contributing factors (such as trauma and oppression), someLGBTQ+ people also face challenges in accessing treatment and support, including:
◦ stigma
◦ internalized shame
◦ lack of culturally-competent treatment
◦ lack of family/community support
◦ insufficient ED education among resource providers in a position to detect and intervene.
