#MentalHealthAwarenessMonth continues. 💚

Mental health includes psychological, social, and -today’s topic – emotional well-being.

In a recent* study, researchers found that individuals who tend to judge negative feelings (ex: sadness, fear, anger) as bad or inappropriate experience more symptoms of anxiety and depression than those who generally perceive feelings in positive or neutral ways.

Painful and uncomfortable as they can be, emotions and feelings are essentially harmless, totally natural, and usually short-lived; it’s their judgment, suppression, and rumination that causes real pain and suffering.

Emotions can’t be eliminated (nor should they be) but they can be regulated and better understood through a lens of self-compassion.

Here are a few more things to consider:

• Practicing acceptance for negative emotions isn’t the same thing as accepting the situations that cause them.
• Unpleasant emotions and feelings can be useful; fear, frustration, or anger, for example can motivate positive change.
• You are not your emotions nor your feelings.
• While feelings are valid, they are not facts.
• Learning emotion regulation is hard work; it’s ok to need and ask for help.
• Prioritizing your emotional health will have a positive impact on your mental health and relationships (including your relationship with yourself).
