• People with borderline personality disorder (BPD) have a greater prevalence of EDs than the general population.
• BPD is a personality disorder characterized by patterns of instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image and affects, and marked impulsivity in a variety of contexts, including
• reckless driving, binge eating, substance use, or excessive spending
• self-injury; suicidal ideation, or suicidal behavior
• unstable or changing relationships
• fear of abandonment
• unstable self-image
• stress-related paranoia
• anger regulation problems
• consistent and constant feelings of sadness or worthlessness
Some BPD symptoms contribute to problematic eating behavior, which can develop into EDs over time.
While BPD can co-occur with any ED diagnosis, it is most prevalent among those whose ED symptoms meet criteria for BN or OSFED.
BPD and EDs share some similarities. They both:
• affect one’s ability to maintain healthy relationships
• can significantly diminish quality of life
• utilize maladaptive coping skills to deal with emotional dysregulation.
• are deadly disorders that require specialized intervention…
• and, both are treatable.
